The first site: Cortland at Wool
Our community led the push for Cortland Avenue’s first Bay Wheels station, working with SFMTA and Lyft and turning out strongly at the April 5, 2024 public hearing. The approved station at Cortland and Wool now connects Bernal to San Francisco’s larger bike-share network.
Coming soon: Cortland at Gates
A second station at Cortland and Gates has now been approved because neighbors kept advocating with both SFMTA and Lyft. It will bring bike share closer to the eastern end of Cortland’s commercial corridor and make short, car-free trips more convenient.
A new split-station design
The Gates station is a new 10-dock design split into two five-plate segments, one on each side of Gates Street within the existing red daylighting zones on the north side of Cortland. The docks are solar powered and bolt to the street without excavation.

The two sites show how sustained, specific advocacy can produce practical transportation choices. Residents can use e-bikes for commutes and errands, visitors can reach local businesses, and each new connection makes Bernal less isolated from the citywide network.
